Pioneer Venus

Two American spacecraft sent to Venus in 1978. Pioneer Venus 1 was an orbiter, launched on 20 May 1978, which obtained radar maps of the surface and returned visual images and other data. Pioneer Venus 2, launched on 8 August 1978, was an atmospheric probe, with five small landers not intended to transmit data after impact.
